China organized a seminar at the United Nations (UN) in Vienna on Tuesday to advocate for the use of nuclear technologies in global development, particularly in the Global South. The seminar, titled “Atoms for a Better Home and Global South,” was co-hosted by China’s permanent mission to the UN, the China Atomic Energy Authority, and the China National Nuclear Corporation.
Held alongside the ongoing ministerial conference on nuclear science and technology by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the event aimed to highlight nuclear technology’s role in advancing global development.
Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna, emphasized that since China launched the Global Development Initiative (GDI) three years ago, over 100 countries and more than 20 international organizations have supported it, with more than 80 countries joining the GDI’s Group of Friends. Li stressed that China has actively promoted international cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology through multilateral platforms in Vienna.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed that the GDI is crucial for guiding global development and improving the well-being of people worldwide. He also commended China’s ongoing support for the IAEA and its role as a leader in nuclear science and technology, hoping for continued contributions to global development.
Additionally, around 300 participants, including senior government officials, experts, and representatives from international organizations, attended the seminar.
