China expresses sorrow over the death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, acknowledging his long-standing contributions to the growth of China-U.S. relations, as stated by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Monday.
Mao highlighted Carter’s role as a key promoter and decision-maker in the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the United States.
China appreciates Carter’s vital contributions to the progress of China-U.S. relations, including the friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two nations over the years, Mao said during a press briefing.
The Carter Center announced the passing of Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th U.S. president from 1977 to 1981, at the age of 100 on Sunday.
In December 1978, under Carter’s leadership, China and the U.S. issued the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, which culminated in the formalization of diplomatic ties between the two countries on January 1, 1979.
