China leads in Global South cooperation as the prominence of Global South was highlighted by foreign ministry spokesperson.
As the Global South played a significant role in reshaping economic globalization and improving global governance in 2024, China reaffirmed its commitment to working in solidarity with these nations for development and the advancement of humanity, according to Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Tuesday.
In 2024, key multilateral events, including the first expanded BRICS summit, the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, and the 19th G20 Summit, were hosted in Global South countries like Peru and Brazil. Observers have termed 2024 as a pivotal year for the Global South.
During a press briefing, Mao highlighted the growing prominence of the Global South as a defining feature of a shifting world order. She noted achievements such as strengthened BRICS cooperation, the emergence of the “Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus” model, and the African Union’s debut in the G20. These milestones reflect the increasing active participation of Global South nations in global multilateral initiatives.
Mao emphasized China’s role as a key member of the Global South, dedicated to fostering unity and progress among these countries. She also outlined China’s eight initiatives to bolster cooperation, urging the Global South to champion peace, drive open development, enhance global governance, and promote cultural exchange.
China, she added, remains committed to genuine multilateralism, safeguarding the shared interests of developing nations, and contributing to global progress.
