China’s top internet authority has announced a nationwide initiative aimed at curbing the improper use of artificial intelligence technologies, set to run for three months.
The campaign, detailed in a circular released by the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission on Wednesday, will be implemented in two stages.
In the first stage, authorities will concentrate on tightening control over AI-related sources. This includes removing unauthorized AI applications, improving oversight of AI-generated content and technologies, and urging online platforms to enhance their systems for detecting and handling violations.
The second stage will address more specific problems such as the use of AI to spread false information, create obscene or harmful material, impersonate others, or engage in online harassment and trolling.
During this phase, efforts will be made to eliminate illegal and harmful content, with penalties to be imposed on offending individuals, content creators, MCN agencies, and digital platforms.
