China-Laos Railway Surpasses 50 Million Passengers as it continues to strengthen regional connectivity under BRI.
Since its inauguration on December 3, 2021, the China-Laos Railway has successfully facilitated over 50 million passenger trips, as reported by the railway operator.
As a key initiative under the China led Belt and Road Initiative, the 1,035-km railway connects Kunming in Yunnan Province, China, with Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The railway has played a crucial role in strengthening regional connectivity, driving economic growth, fostering cultural exchanges, and emerging as a vital transport corridor with significant development prospects.
According to China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd., as of Friday, the railway had operated 71,000 passenger train services, catering to more than 480,000 international travelers from 112 countries and regions.
Passenger numbers have shown continuous growth, with monthly ridership increasing from 600,000 in the early operational phase to 1.6 million across the entire route.
To boost international tourism, Chinese and Laotian railway authorities have collaborated with tourism departments, leading to increased activity in sectors such as scenic attractions, hospitality, and dining establishments along the railway’s path.
Additionally, the China-Laos Railway has introduced service enhancements, including multilingual translation support in Chinese, Lao, and English at stations and onboard trains, as well as health-related amenities such as portable blood pressure monitors.
