China-invested solar power project launched in Laos which integrates various energy sources.
A 1-million-kilowatt photovoltaic project, invested in by China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), officially commenced construction in northern Laos, CGN announced on Thursday.
Jointly developed by CGN and over 70 Chinese and Laotian enterprises, this initiative represents the first phase of CGN’s clean energy base in northern Laos, which integrates various energy sources, including wind, solar, and biomass. The project marks the first large-scale photovoltaic initiative in Laos.
With an installed capacity of one million kilowatts, the project is expected to produce an average of 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours annually, sufficient to meet the electricity needs of approximately 10 million households.
The project’s energy conservation is projected to save the equivalent of 510,000 tonnes of standard coal each year. Khamphiang Yachongva, deputy governor of Oudomxay Province, one of the three provinces hosting the clean energy base, praised the project as a symbol of successful China-Laos collaboration.
The deputy governor highlighted the project’s potential to boost the province’s socio-economic development by creating jobs and improving infrastructure, including roads, schools, water supply systems, and townships.
