China, India reinforce bilateral cooperation as both Foreign Ministers met on the sidelines of G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Friday to discuss bilateral relations on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reflected on the productive meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan, Russia, last year. He emphasized that this meeting set the overall direction for improving and developing bilateral ties. Both nations, as ancient civilizations and neighboring countries, agreed on the importance of mutual trust and cooperation for their shared success.

He highlighted that interactions at various levels between China and India have resumed in a structured manner. The special representatives handling border issues have reached agreements on addressing specific disputes. Wang stressed that rebuilding trust and fostering mutually beneficial cooperation align with the expectations of both nations’ populations. He urged both sides to adhere to the understanding reached by their leaders to maintain a positive trajectory in bilateral relations.

China is prepared to collaborate with India in organizing events to mark the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, aiming to bring new momentum to their ties, Wang added.

Jaishankar acknowledged that the Kazan meeting between Modi and Xi played a crucial role in guiding the improvement of India-China relations. He noted that bilateral engagements across different sectors have gradually resumed, yielding positive outcomes.

He emphasized that fostering mutual trust is in the best interest of both nations. India values the progress made in bilateral ties and is keen to work with China to expedite the reactivation of cooperation mechanisms, strengthen cultural and academic exchanges, ease cross-border travel, and ensure peace and stability in border areas.

As key members of the G20, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS, India and China must enhance coordination. Jaishankar affirmed India’s willingness to engage in deeper communication and collaboration with China to advance shared regional and global interests.
