The China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have agreed to strengthen their collaboration in nuclear technology to support sustainable development in the Global South. Both organizations signed important agreements on Wednesday, which established a five-year plan for enhanced cooperation.
As part of the agreements, China and the IAEA will focus on key areas such as nuclear security, agriculture, healthcare, environment, and basic nuclear scientific research. China will also utilize its nuclear research institutions and universities to train professionals from the Global South, promoting global governance and talent exchange in the nuclear field.
Shan Zhongde, the director of CAEA, emphasized China’s commitment to working with the IAEA to ensure more equitable, inclusive, and orderly development of nuclear energy. The goal is to make significant contributions to the peaceful use of nuclear technology for the benefit of the Global South.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, the IAEA’s director general, commended China’s progress in nuclear energy development and the application of nuclear technology. He acknowledged China’s pivotal role in advancing global nuclear governance and affirmed the IAEA’s readiness to further strengthen cooperation with China in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
