China calls for SCO unity on multilateral trading system amidst the rising global tensions.
China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, Ling Ji, urged members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to collaborate in supporting a multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core, to provide stability and positive momentum for the global economy. He made these remarks during the China-SCO Conference on Industrial Cooperation for Sustainable Development, held in Tianjin.
Ling Ji emphasized that the U.S. “reciprocal tariffs” on its trading partners constitute a serious violation of WTO rules. He added that China has taken firm countermeasures to protect the multilateral trading system, safeguard international trade order, and defend its own legitimate rights and interests.
He further noted that China is committed to working with all parties to uphold the principles and rules of the WTO, aiming to promote the liberalization and facilitation of regional trade and investment.
According to statistics from China’s Ministry of Commerce, trade between China and SCO member states, observer states, and dialogue partners reached a record high of 890 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. This accounted for about 14.4% of China’s total foreign trade.
China will also host an SCO summit in Tianjin this autumn.
