China, FIFA to collaborate for youth football development as FIFA President Gianni Infantino was in Shanghai, China.
On Thursday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino commended China’s initiatives to enhance youth football, with both parties vowing to work together to harness China’s football potential.
Infantino was in Shanghai for an important meeting with government and sports officials. During the second day of his visit to China, he met with Zhang Jiasheng, the deputy director of the General Administration of Sport of China, and Song Kai, the President of the Chinese Football Association (CFA).
“We talked about strategies for collaborating to ensure that more young people engage in and excel at our sport, as well as how the FIFA Forward program can contribute to football development,” Infantino stated. “FIFA’s growing youth tournaments demonstrate our mutual dedication to grassroots development, and I was impressed by the advancements made in unlocking the immense football potential of this beautiful country.”
FIFA reported that the CFA introduced a revamped National Youth Super League (NYSL) in 2019, supported by FIFA Forward, to provide young players with the opportunity to compete on a weekly basis.
Additionally, FIFA Forward is financing the organization of the CFA Cup competition, which will include teams from the top three tiers of the Chinese league system, along with some amateur clubs, over three seasons beginning in 2024.
