China conveyed its condolences following the death of Pope Francis, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
Guo Jiakun, the spokesperson, mentioned in a daily news briefing that in recent years, China and the Vatican have fostered positive interaction and productive exchanges.
Guo expressed China’s willingness to continue working with the Vatican to further enhance their bilateral relations.
In response to a question about the Vatican’s so-called “relations with Taiwan,” Guo reaffirmed that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, and that the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the entire country.
Guo further stated that an increasing number of countries are recognizing and adhering to the one-China policy. He urged relevant nations to acknowledge the course of history and align with the correct stance of supporting the one-China principle.
Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
