China establishes 903 wetland parks in the last 20 years showing committment to wetland protection and ecological restoration.
Over the past two decades, China has established 903 national wetland parks, according to information presented at an international seminar held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, on Wednesday.
These parks have been instrumental in preserving 2.4 million hectares of wetlands, which serve as vital habitats for key national wildlife species, as reported during the wetland protection seminar.
During the seminar, Yan Zhen, the vice head of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA), emphasized the country’s long-standing commitment to wetland conservation and its continuous efforts in this area.
As of now, China’s total wetland area is 56.35 million hectares. The country is home to 82 wetlands of international significance, a number that ranks among the highest in the world, according to NFGA data.
Additionally, ecological protection and restoration efforts have been ramped up, with 300,000 hectares of wetlands successfully restored under the national wetland conservation plan.
To promote international collaboration in this field, China has also established the International Mangrove Center, contributing to global wetland conservation initiatives, as Yan highlighted.
Looking ahead, the NFGA plans to implement more comprehensive measures to protect wetland ecosystems, with key projects focused on areas such as the Yangtze and Yellow river basins. Furthermore, the forestry and grassland authorities aim to boost international cooperation and play an active role in global ecological governance, Yan added.
