China, Egypt conclude first joint Air Force drill reflecting high-level coordination of the air force between the two countries.
China and Egypt recently concluded their first-ever joint air force training exercise, which included simulated air superiority missions, air defense suppression, and a symbolic low-altitude flight over the Pyramids. An expert noted that the drills reflected high-level coordination between the fighter jets of two countries, closely resembling real combat scenarios.
The exercise, “Eagles of Civilization 2025,” wrapped up at an Egyptian airbase on Sunday, according to information from the Chinese PLA Air Force reported on Monday. This marked the first time the PLA Air Force systematically deployed a comprehensive military force to Africa for joint drills, as noted by the PLA.
Upon arrival, the PLA Air Force swiftly completed necessary preparations, including setting up equipment and coordinating missions. They successfully conducted their first flight, demonstrating strengths in long-range mobility, rapid response, and integrated combat systems.
Throughout the 18-day exercise, both air forces exchanged techniques in air combat strategy, refueling, and operational planning. Joint drills included scenarios like air superiority missions, air defense, search and rescue, and mixed formation flights.
Officer Long Yifei highlighted the pivotal role of aircraft like the Y-20 transport and YU-20 aerial tanker in projecting force rapidly and supporting agile air operations. Their deployment offered key insights for future combat-readiness training. Footage released showed the use of PLA aircraft including the KJ-500 early warning aircraft, J-10C fighter jet, Z-20 helicopter, and YU-20 tanker.
One image captured a YU-20 tanker refueling Egyptian MiG-29 fighters mid-air. Another showed a formation of Chinese and Egyptian warplanes flying low over the Pyramids. Wang Ya’nan, a military aviation analyst, emphasized two major achievements: first, the Y-20’s capability to transport large military equipment over long distances, including helicopters and potentially tanks.
Second, Wang noted that the exercise emphasized key air combat strategies—achieving air dominance and suppressing enemy defenses—which are crucial for controlling airspace in modern warfare. These require a mix of equipment such as early warning systems and tankers alongside fighters.
The PLA Air Force stated the training was a milestone in China-Egypt military ties, representing a new phase of practical cooperation. As the first joint air drill between the two air forces, the exercise not only improved combat readiness but also deepened bilateral trust and laid the groundwork for future military collaboration.
Wang said the training laid a foundation for wider cooperation, especially as Egypt seeks to modernize its military hardware. Furthermore, PLA pilot Li Bokuan reflected that the exercise showcased strong operational ability and fostered mutual learning. He called it both a professional and symbolic exchange between two ancient civilizations, with the shared flight over the Pyramids reflecting enduring friendship.
