China is developing a 50-megawatt gas turbine to power its next-generation warships, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and amphibious assault ships. The CGT50 turbine is designed to strengthen China’s self-reliant military technology and strategic defense capabilities.
The turbine is being developed by the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation, which has achieved full self-sufficiency across design, manufacturing, testing, and validation. This technology also has potential civilian applications, such as industrial drives and peak electricity generation.
China’s development of advanced gas turbines aligns with efforts to establish a self-reliant supply chain in sectors critical to national security. The move also reflects Beijing’s ambition to compete globally in high-end power and defense technologies.
