China criticizes UNSC inaction on Gaza ceasefire

China criticizes UNSC inaction on Gaza ceasefire and emphasized the need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

China’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, has criticized the repeated inability of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to pass resolutions calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, attributing the impasse to the United States’ solitary veto.

Speaking at a UNSC meeting on Saturday regarding the escalating conflict, Fu condemned the council’s inaction, stating that the ongoing violence persists unchecked while the Security Council remains immobilized. He warned that delays in taking decisive action would result in further devastation and loss of civilian lives.

China reiterated its position on the urgent need for an immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire. Fu emphasized that such a ceasefire must not be contingent upon other issues, as doing so would amount to condoning the continued killing of civilians and perpetuating conflict.

Fu also called for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, stressing the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law. He urged Israel to remove restrictions on aid entry, reverse measures targeting the UNRWA, and ensure the broad and safe distribution of humanitarian supplies throughout Gaza. Furthermore, he underscored the necessity of upholding the two-state solution in line with international law and UNSC resolutions.

He further stated that the future of Gaza should be determined by the Palestinian people and should be predicated on Israel’s withdrawal, rejecting attempts to alter Gaza’s demographics or borders.

Fu warned against the risk of a wider regional conflict and urged Israel to cease its military actions and provocations against neighboring countries, including Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. He also highlighted the need to protect UN peacekeeping forces, emphasizing their critical role in maintaining regional stability.

Describing the Gaza crisis as the UNSC’s “greatest stress test” in the Middle East, Fu stated that the council’s credibility and authority are on the line. He criticized certain member states for obstructing progress and called for a reevaluation of their roles within the council.

In closing, Fu urged all nations to take responsibility and support the Security Council in using its full range of tools to achieve an immediate ceasefire and restore peace in the region.
