China condemns U.S. breach of Geneva trade agreement as the Ministry of Commerce stated that U.S. has undermined the consensus reached.

The Ministry of Commerce of China stated on Monday that the United States has seriously undermined the consensus reached during the China-U.S. economic and trade talks held in Geneva by introducing a series of discriminatory and restrictive measures against China.

These measures reportedly include new guidelines on AI chip export controls, the suspension of chip design software sales to China, and the announcement of visa revocations for Chinese students, as detailed by a ministry spokesperson.

The spokesperson condemned these actions as a severe breach of the agreement made during the January 17 phone call between the leaders of both countries, causing significant harm to China’s legitimate rights and interests.

According to the spokesperson, the United States has unilaterally and repeatedly triggered new economic and trade tensions, worsening uncertainty and instability in the bilateral economic relationship.

Rather than reflecting on its own conduct, the U.S. has falsely accused China of violating the consensus, a claim the spokesperson described as a gross distortion of facts that China firmly rejects.

The spokesperson noted that China has canceled or suspended tariff and non-tariff measures previously imposed against U.S. reciprocal tariffs, demonstrating China’s responsible approach by seriously implementing and actively upholding the Geneva consensus.

The spokesperson emphasized that China remains resolute in protecting its rights and interests while sincerely honoring the agreed consensus.

Describing the Geneva talks’ results as hard-won, the spokesperson called on the United States to align with China’s efforts, promptly rectify its missteps, jointly uphold the consensus, and foster a healthy, stable, and sustainable China-U.S. economic and trade relationship.

The spokesperson warned that should the United States persist in harmful actions against China, China will decisively take strong measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
