China concerned over further escalation between Hezbollah, Israel as Fu Cong condemned Israel’s actions during an emergency session of UNSC.
A senior Chinese diplomat, addressing an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Lebanon, expressed deep concern about the potential for further escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, urging all sides to exercise maximum restraint.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, voiced China’s shock over the detonation of thousands of communication devices such as pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon, which resulted in significant casualties.
He emphasized that using communication tools for indiscriminate attacks that cause widespread civilian harm and incite social panic is unprecedented.
“This kind of act is a serious breach of a nation’s sovereignty and security, a blatant violation of international law, particularly humanitarian law, and a disregard for human life,” Fu said.
While condemning these attacks, Fu called for a thorough and prompt investigation to ensure that the masterminds and perpetrators are held accountable.
Highlighting the volatile situation in the Middle East, particularly the conflicts between Israel-Hamas and Israel-Hezbollah, Fu urged Israel to stop relying on military force, immediately cease its operations in Gaza, halt its violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and security, and avoid actions that could push the region into a new disaster.
Fu also called on influential nations to take tangible steps to prevent Israel from continuing down this dangerous path. He affirmed China’s support for the UN Security Council’s efforts to reduce tensions and maintain peace and stability between Lebanon and Israel.
