A fleet of China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels has completed joint drills and patrol missions with Russia’s coast guard, the CCG announced on Thursday.
Two Chinese vessels set off from Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, on September 13 and returned after a 35-day mission, the CCG reported.
During the exercises, both nations’ vessels formed a joint fleet to patrol the high seas of the North Pacific Ocean for the first time, conducting inspections and monitoring fishing vessels in line with legal requirements to maintain order in the region’s fishing activities.
The patrols also included successful joint exercises, such as search and rescue operations, damage control, lifesaving missions, and the pursuit of illegal vessels.
The CCG emphasized that this mission is part of its regular annual plan, not directed at any particular target, region, or country, and is conducted in accordance with international law and norms.
The joint patrols and exercises are seen as crucial for enhancing mutual trust and cooperation between the Chinese and Russian coast guards, while also ensuring the safety and stability of the North Pacific Ocean, according to the CCG.
The CCG affirmed its commitment to ongoing bilateral and multilateral maritime law enforcement cooperation, as well as active participation in international and regional ocean governance.
