China backed solar project launched in Balochistan to tackle the persistent crisis of energy in the province through renewable energy solutions.
To tackle the persistent electricity crisis in Balochistan, the provincial government has introduced a program aimed at distributing 15,000 solar home systems. This initiative is being financially supported by Chinese aid agencies to provide sustainable energy solutions.
Funded by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and the South-South Cooperation for Addressing Climate Change, the project will be implemented under the supervision of the Balochistan Energy Department to ensure efficient distribution and execution.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Ahmad Bugti officially launched the program during a ceremony in Quetta, highlighting the strategic importance of Gwadar in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and its role in the region’s energy landscape.
Speaking at the event, Bugti emphasized that Gwadar would be a central beneficiary of the program, referring to it as the “jewel in the crown” of CPEC. He announced that at least 5,000 solar systems would be specifically allocated to the port city to address its energy needs.
Bugti also called on the people of Gwadar to acknowledge their crucial role in CPEC’s success. He stressed that CPEC was established for their benefit and will continue to progress with their support. He described such initiatives as symbolic commitments to the welfare of the local population.
China has previously taken steps to assist in resolving Gwadar’s energy issues. In July 2022, the Chinese government provided 3,000 solar systems to help counter power shortages and address climate-related concerns in the region.
