A high-level delegation from the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) visited Pakistan from August 24 to 28, 2025, to evaluate the country’s achievements as an Associate Member of the global research body.
The five-member team of senior CERN experts met with the Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and inspected several premier institutions, including the National Centre for Physics (NCP), Heavy Mechanical Complex-3 (HMC-3), Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH), Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (INMOL), and the National Institute for Laser and Optronics (NILOP). The visits aimed to assess Pakistan’s advancements in science, research, and technology.
CERN, headquartered in Geneva, is the world’s foremost particle physics and nuclear research laboratory, established on the principle of “Science for Peace.” It has 25 Member States and nine Associate Members, including Pakistan.
Pakistan joined CERN as an Associate Member on July 31, 2015. Since then, the PAEC has coordinated PAK-CERN collaboration, enabling Pakistani researchers to contribute to cutting-edge projects. Membership has also facilitated technology development, scientific training, and the grooming of young engineers and scientists.
The latest visit, according to the Foreign Office, underlines CERN’s recognition of Pakistan’s progress and its growing role in international scientific cooperation.
