The Australian capital, Canberra, is set to strengthen its collaboration with Beijing as 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of their sister-city relationship, according to a senior official from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr expressed a keen interest in using this milestone to boost cooperation with China in sectors such as trade, culture, education, and tourism.
Barr made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the “Chinese Showcase” at the 2025 Australia National Multicultural Festival on Friday.
Chinese Ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, highlighted that the Chinese New Year has been officially recognized by UNESCO as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further elevating its global significance.
As per the Chinese lunar calendar, the Year of the Snake commenced on January 29.
The “Chinese Showcase” is a significant part of the Australia National Multicultural Festival. Xiao noted that the Chinese community in Australia has played a leading role in fostering China-Australia relations and encouraged them to continue their contributions to the long-term development of bilateral ties.
Additionally, the Australia National Multicultural Festival is a landmark event in Canberra, uniting over 170 multicultural communities this year to celebrate their heritage through food, art, music, and dance.
