The launch ceremony of the Belt and Road Film Week, part of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), took place on Wednesday at the Shanghai Shendi Group Exhibition Center in Pudong New Area.
During the event, well-known actors Huang Xiaoming, Yu Shi, and actress Tang Yan were honored as ambassadors for the film week. Additionally, honorary guest certificates were presented to 20 alliance members and international guests. Around 20 key enterprises and cultural projects signed agreements to establish themselves in the Shanghai International Resort, and the Southeast Asia Festival Market was officially opened.
This year’s Belt and Road Film Week, themed “Travel with Films,” features 15 carefully selected films from the countries in the Belt and Road Initiative. Many of these films have been shortlisted at major international festivals including Rotterdam, Locarno, and Tokyo.
The program includes eight post-screening discussions between audiences and filmmakers. Five of the selected films will be screened concurrently in five Yangtze River Delta cities, Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Hefei, to bring the SIFF experience closer to local audiences.
Over 40 international filmmakers from more than 20 countries will gather in Pudong during the week to exchange views on industry collaboration, global film promotion, and nurturing young film talent through alliance meetings and roundtable forums.
Since its inception in 2018, the Belt and Road Film Week has become a key platform for cross-border cinematic and cultural exchange, showcasing 129 films from Belt and Road countries by 2024.
Using its alliance structure, 54 Chinese films have been exhibited in member countries, with 10 making it to the main competition sections of international festivals and 3 winning major accolades. The Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance has expanded significantly, growing from 31 institutions in 29 countries to 55 institutions across 48 countries.
