Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region drives coordinated development, with a strong focus on innovation and industrial growth.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) region has achieved remarkable progress in economic, ecological, and social development, an official from the Central Leading Group for Coordinated Regional Development and the National Development and Reform Commission stated on Thursday. Since China launched the regional development strategy in 2014, the area has evolved into a major city cluster with a strong focus on innovation and industrial growth.

Over the past 11 years, the region has established 14 innovation platforms and seven national advanced manufacturing clusters. Additionally, coordinated industrial chains have been developed in key sectors such as new energy, high-end instruments, and robotics, fostering technological progress and industrial efficiency.

The transportation network in the region has significantly improved, with the introduction of new railways and highways, enabling one to one-and-a-half-hour travel times between major cities. Meanwhile, regional airport clusters handled 150 million passenger trips in the past year. Environmental efforts have also yielded positive results, with air quality reaching nearly 75 percent of days with good air conditions and surface water quality improving significantly.

The social security system in the region has become more integrated, ensuring interoperability across medical institutions, transportation, and tourist attractions. In 2024, the region’s GDP reached 11.5 trillion yuan (approximately 1.6 trillion USD), marking a 2.1-fold increase compared to 2013.

A central goal of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development strategy is to relieve Beijing of non-essential functions and redistribute resources, with Xiong’an New Area playing a crucial role in this transition. Beijing-based universities have opened branch campuses, major hospitals have developed medical complexes, and state-owned enterprises have begun operations in the area.

Since its establishment in April 2017, Xiong’an has transformed from a concept into a thriving city, expanding to over 200 square kilometers and attracting investments exceeding 830 billion yuan. The area now features over 200 community service centers, creating a “15-minute life circle” that ensures easy access to shopping, leisure, and essential services for residents.
