Balochistan approves fisheries policy for sustainable growth in which unregistered fishing vessels will be formally registered.
Over 2,000 unregistered fishing vessels in Balochistan will be formally registered under the newly approved Balochistan Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy 2025-2035. Once registered, boat owners will gain access to various benefits outlined in the policy.
Unveiled on February 22, the policy highlights that Gwadar’s seafood industry has long faced infrastructure deficiencies, despite its crucial role in the local and national economies. The policy seeks to tackle these challenges by establishing processing facilities to enhance value addition, expanding cold storage and transportation capabilities, and replacing outdated wooden boats. It also promotes aquaculture development as a means of socio-economic improvement and alternative livelihoods for the region’s communities.
As Balochistan approves fisheries policy for sustainable growth, it also focuses on sustainable fisheries management by enforcing a trawling ban and restricting harmful fishing gear to help restore fish stocks. Governance improvements are planned through the formation of the Balochistan Fisheries & Aquaculture Council.
Furthermore, the policy introduces a special Endowment Fund and a Balochistan Fisheries Welfare Fund, while advocating for legal reforms, including special courts for expedited justice. It also proposes governance reforms for harbors and coastal development. Additionally, the Fisheries Department, in collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies, will establish a monitoring, control, and surveillance system to ensure compliance.
