Pakistan has officially named its first lunar rover Jinnah-1, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) announced.
The rover will travel to the Moon in 2029 as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission. It will conduct scientific research at the lunar south pole, a region known for challenging terrain and major research potential.
Jinnah-1 Selected From 4,000 Proposals
Suparco selected the name through a nationwide competition. The agency received around 4,000 proposals from across Pakistan.
Interestingly, several participants proposed the name “Jinnah-1.” Authorities selected the winning entry through a lucky draw.
Tayyab Karim, a 17-year-old from Bahawalnagar, won the competition for suggesting the name.
Tribute to Quaid-i-Azam
The name honors Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Suparco said it also represents Pakistan’s resolve, progress, and ambitions in space exploration.
Moreover, the mission marks an important step in Pakistan’s growing space capabilities.
What Will Jinnah-1 Study?
Jinnah-1 will conduct several scientific experiments on the lunar surface. Its research will focus on:
- Plasma and radiation
- Lunar surface geology
- Future lunar research
- Conditions relevant to potential human presence
These studies could provide valuable data about the Moon’s south polar region.
Pakistan-China Space Cooperation
Pakistan joined China’s Chang’e-8 mission through a collaboration announced by Suparco in 2024.
The partnership will send Pakistan’s indigenous rover to the lunar surface. As a result, Jinnah-1 will represent a significant milestone in Pakistan-China space cooperation.
Growing Race to the Lunar South Pole
The Moon’s south pole has become a major focus of international space exploration.
India successfully landed its unmanned Chandrayaan-3 mission near the region in 2023. Meanwhile, the United States is targeting a crewed lunar landing in the area, while China is also developing plans for future human exploration.
