Afghanistan welcomes regional stand against foreign military bases after Russia, China, Iran, and Pakistan declared their opposition to foreign troops in the country. The Taliban government called this consensus a key step toward regional peace and security.
Regional Consensus at UN Assembly
The four nations reaffirmed their stance during a meeting of their foreign ministers at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. Their joint statement stressed respect for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, warning that new foreign bases would not support regional stability.
Taliban’s Response to U.S. Pressure
Deputy Taliban spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said Afghanistan would not allow its territory to be used against other countries or host armed groups. He dismissed foreign concerns as “baseless” and emphasised that Kabul is working to combat drugs, corruption, and militancy while promoting mutual respect in international relations.
The statement followed remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who said Washington sought to regain control of the Bagram Air Base. Once the centre of U.S. operations, it was vacated in July 2021 after NATO’s withdrawal. Trump warned of “consequences” if the Taliban resisted. Kabul firmly rejected the idea, insisting its sovereignty is non-negotiable.
Security and Terrorism Concerns
Russia, China, Iran, and Pakistan also pressed the Taliban to take verifiable actions against terrorism. They named ISIL, Al Qaeda, the TTP, ETIM, BLA, Jaish ul Adl, and the Majeed Brigade as active threats inside Afghanistan, warning that their presence continues to endanger regional and global security.
Pakistan-Afghanistan Relations
In a related development, a Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) delegation from Pakistan, led by Professor Muhammad Ibrahim, met Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul to discuss ways to improve bilateral ties.
Conclusion
By backing the regional consensus, the Taliban reinforces its claim as the defender of Afghan sovereignty. At the same time, it faces mounting pressure from neighbouring countries to prove its commitment to eliminating terrorism and securing long-term stability.
