Death Toll Rises After Third Quake
Afghanistan earthquake toll tops 2,200 amid repeated tremors this week, with more than 3,600 injured, Taliban officials confirmed. The eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar have suffered the worst destruction, as a magnitude 6.2 quake struck Nangarhar on Thursday, following earlier shocks on Sunday and Tuesday.
Villages Flattened, Thousands Displaced
Entire villages in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces lie in ruins. More than 6,700 homes have collapsed, leaving thousands without shelter. Aid agencies estimate that 500,000 people, including 263,000 children, are directly or indirectly affected. In some villages, nearly two-thirds of residents have been killed or injured, while almost every building sustained damage.
Relief Efforts Struggle in Harsh Terrain
Rescue teams face blocked roads and landslides that slow relief work. Helicopters have airlifted injured survivors from remote mountain areas. Authorities have also set up emergency camps, distributed food, and delivered medical supplies. Yet the United Nations warns that resources are running out. The World Food Programme says food stocks can last only four weeks without new funding. The World Health Organisation also reports a $3 million shortage in medicines and trauma kits.
Women and Children at Greater Risk
Humanitarian organisations warn that women and girls are most vulnerable. Strict rules prevent many from leaving home alone, and a lack of female doctors limits their access to treatment. Survivors, fearing aftershocks, are living outdoors in unstable ground conditions worsened by heavy rains.
Afghanistan’s Growing Vulnerability
The Afghanistan earthquake toll tops 2,200 amid repeated tremors, highlighting the country’s fragile state. Located on active tectonic plates, Afghanistan is prone to deadly quakes. Poverty, decades of conflict, and shrinking international aid make disaster response harder. Aid groups are urging the global community not to leave Afghans to face this crisis alone.
