Afghan Interim Government Expresses Interest in Joining CPEC
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Afghanistan’s Aspiration to Join Belt and Road

The interim administration of Afghanistan, under the leadership of acting Commerce Minister Haji Nooruddin Azizi, has expressed a strong desire to formally participate in the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a monumental infrastructure and economic development project. This announcement signifies Afghanistan’s determination to integrate itself into the regional economic landscape and leverage its strategic geographical position for connectivity and economic growth. The move reflects the interim government’s commitment to strengthening regional ties and fostering cooperation in pursuit of shared prosperity.

Steps Toward Inclusion

The Afghan interim government is taking concrete steps to realize its aspiration of joining the Belt and Road Initiative and CPEC. Kabul plans to dispatch a technical delegation to China to engage in discussions and negotiations. This delegation will lay the groundwork for closer collaboration with China, fostering economic and infrastructural development within Afghanistan. By actively pursuing this opportunity, Afghanistan aims to align itself with a broader regional vision of connectivity and shared development.

China’s Integral Role in Afghanistan

China has played a pivotal role in Afghanistan, notably as a facilitator of the peace process and a supporter of the country’s reconstruction efforts. China’s decision to appoint an ambassador to Kabul, making it the first country to do so after the formation of the Afghan interim government, underscores its deep commitment to the stability and development of Afghanistan. This diplomatic move serves as a testament to the significance of the Afghan-China relationship and its potential for fostering economic growth, regional stability, and peace.

A Dialogue of Mutual Benefit

The dialogue between Afghanistan and China marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen their relationship. Both nations view this as an opportunity to explore avenues of collaboration that extend beyond geographical boundaries. As Afghanistan seeks to rebuild and revitalize its economy, China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative and the CPEC offer the prospect of enhanced infrastructure, trade opportunities, and economic development. This mutual desire for cooperation reflects a broader commitment to regional peace and prosperity, which has the potential to yield substantial benefits for both countries and the wider region.
