The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has signed a Rs133.18 billion agreement for the HM-1 contract of the Diamer Basha Dam Project.
The contract was awarded to Power China-IKAN Joint Venture (JV) at a signing ceremony held at WAPDA House in Lahore on October 24, according to Gwadar Pro.
The agreement covers the manufacturing, supply and installation of hydro-mechanical equipment and hydraulic steel structures required for the dam.
Contract Covers Gates and Hydraulic Equipment
The HM-1 contract includes gates and steel structures designed to control water flows at the project.
The equipment will be installed at flushing tunnels on both the left and right banks, as well as at the dam’s power intakes and outlets.
The scope of work also includes steel lining, hoisting systems, pumping systems and related electrical works. These components will support the operation of the dam’s water-control infrastructure.
Diamer Basha Dam Supports Water and Energy Security
The Diamer Basha Dam Project is a priority initiative of the federal government aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s water, food and energy security.
The project is being constructed on the Indus River, approximately 40 kilometres downstream of Chilas.
Once completed, the dam is expected to provide gross water storage capacity of 8.1 million acre-feet (MAF) and an installed electricity generation capacity of 4,500 megawatts (MW).
Project Aims to Expand Water Storage and Power Generation
The project’s planned storage capacity is intended to support water management, while its hydropower facilities are expected to contribute to Pakistan’s electricity supply.
The signing of the HM-1 contract marks a step in the procurement and installation of key mechanical and steel components needed for the dam’s infrastructure.
The project’s wider significance lies in its planned contribution to water storage, agricultural needs and domestic energy generation.
