China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has expanded trade and transport links across Asia and beyond. Xinjiang, in western China, plays a central role in connecting Chinese markets with Central Asia, Russia and South Asia.

Its location supports cross-border trade, industrial development and regional connectivity. The region also provides an important link between China and Pakistan through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Xinjiang Records Strong Foreign Trade Growth

Xinjiang reported foreign trade worth 71.22 billion yuan, or about $10.34 billion, in the first two months of 2026. This represented a 36% increase compared with the same period last year.

Trade with BRI partner countries accounted for 90.3% of the region’s total trade during this period.

Xinjiang also recorded strong growth in 2025. Its foreign trade reached 520.37 billion yuan, equivalent to around $74.83 billion, marking a year-on-year increase of 19.9%.

Trade with BRI partner countries totalled 458.37 billion yuan, up 14.7%. These figures highlight Xinjiang’s growing role in regional commerce and international supply chains.

Improved Logistics Support Cross-Border Trade

Xinjiang is expanding its transport and logistics networks to facilitate trade with international markets. Railways, roads and air links connect the region with Central Asia and Europe.

Customs improvements have also supported the movement of goods. In 2025, Urumqi Customs cleared more than 500 tonnes of imported live king crabs worth 130 million yuan. The volume increased more than fivefold compared with the previous year, according to the supplied report.

The region is also developing new trade channels and logistics facilities. These efforts could support exports of agricultural products, textiles, machinery, chemicals and other manufactured goods.

Kashgar Connects Xinjiang With Pakistan

Kashgar, in southern Xinjiang, is an important gateway for China-Pakistan connectivity. It connects with Pakistan through routes associated with CPEC.

CPEC links transport infrastructure, energy projects and wider economic cooperation between the two countries. The corridor also creates opportunities to expand agricultural trade, industrial partnerships and cross-border business exchanges.

The proposed development of connections between Kashgar and Gwadar could further improve regional trade. However, the development of a wider network of railways, highways, pipelines and communication cables will depend on future infrastructure projects and implementation.

Tourism and Cultural Exchanges Expand

Xinjiang’s growing tourism sector adds another dimension to its regional role. The region recorded more than 265 million domestic and international tourist visits, according to the supplied article.

Tourism can support local businesses and create opportunities for cultural exchange. Stronger travel links could also encourage people-to-people contact between China, Pakistan and other neighbouring countries.

Xinjiang’s location and cultural diversity give it potential to develop tourism alongside trade and transport cooperation.

Technology Creates New Agricultural Opportunities

Agricultural technology is another area of development in Xinjiang. The Xinjiang Agricultural Expo Park covers 16,000 square metres and uses artificial intelligence and hydroponics to grow vegetables in a controlled environment.

These systems can support year-round production without traditional soil-based cultivation. They also offer opportunities to explore modern farming methods and efficient resource use.

For Pakistan, cooperation in agricultural technology could complement existing China-Pakistan exchanges in seeds, crop research and farming practices.

Xinjiang’s Development and Cultural Debate

Xinjiang’s economic development has attracted attention alongside international debate over ethnic rights, cultural identity and government policies.

Chinese authorities maintain that their policies promote social integration and protect the rights of ethnic communities. They also argue that Mandarin-language education provides broader educational and employment opportunities.

Uyghur, Kazakh and other minority languages remain part of the region’s public and cultural life, according to the supplied article. However, claims about the protection of cultural and human rights remain contested internationally and should be assessed through independent evidence.

Economic growth and infrastructure development are important measures of regional change, but they do not alone establish the full state of human rights or cultural freedom.

Opportunities for Pakistan-China Industrial Cooperation

Xinjiang’s growing trade networks could create opportunities for Pakistani businesses. Potential areas include textiles, agricultural products, tourism, logistics and industrial investment.

Pakistani textile manufacturers could explore partnerships and investment opportunities in Xinjiang. Any relocation or expansion decisions should consider production costs, market access, workforce conditions, regulations and access to international buyers.

Closer industrial links could help businesses in both countries connect with wider regional supply chains. Such cooperation would also support the broader economic objectives of CPEC.

Xinjiang’s Role in the Future of the BRI

Xinjiang is becoming an important hub for trade, logistics and industrial cooperation across Eurasia. Its expanding commercial links and transport networks support China’s westward economic engagement.

For Pakistan, stronger connections with Xinjiang could create new opportunities in trade, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism. Turning this potential into lasting benefits will require effective infrastructure, commercially viable projects and sustained cooperation between businesses and governments.
