The Balochistan Provincial Assembly’s Standing Committee on Fisheries reviewed the proposed Balochistan Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill 2026 in Gwadar on October 3.
The legislation focuses on protecting fishermen’s rights and conserving marine resources. It also aims to promote aquaculture and strengthen regulation across the fisheries sector.
Illegal Fishing and Marine Protection
During the meeting, participants raised concerns over illegal trawling and the use of prohibited fishing nets.
They called for stronger enforcement to protect marine resources. In addition, members discussed a science-based fishing-season closure policy linked to fish breeding periods.
Strengthening Fisheries Research
The committee also considered measures to improve fisheries research and data collection.
Moreover, members discussed strengthening the role of the Fisheries Council. Better research and reliable data could support more effective fisheries management.
Fishermen’s Input to Shape the Bill
Committee Chairman Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman Baloch said the committee would consider feedback from fishermen and other stakeholders.
The committee will incorporate relevant input before finalizing the proposed legislation. After that, the bill will move through the required legal procedures for approval.
First Committee Meeting Outside Quetta
The meeting marked the first session of the Standing Committee on Fisheries held outside Quetta.
Holding the session in Gwadar also provided an opportunity to engage directly with stakeholders in one of Balochistan’s key coastal areas.
