A delegation from the U.S. Afghanistan War Commission met Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Monday.
The delegation was led by Co-Chairs Shamila N. Chaudhary and Dr. Colin F. Jackson. It is reviewing the United States’ 20-year engagement in Afghanistan.
Talks Focus on Afghanistan and Regional Security
The meeting covered several matters of mutual interest. These included Pakistan’s support, regional security, and developments in Afghanistan.
Moreover, the delegation discussed perspectives relevant to the Commission’s ongoing review of the U.S. engagement in Afghanistan.
Pakistan Shares Its Security Perspective
Field Marshal Munir outlined Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics that shaped the Afghanistan conflict.
He also highlighted the challenges Pakistan faced during the prolonged conflict. In addition, he stressed the importance of including regional perspectives in the Commission’s assessment.
According to Munir, Pakistan’s experience can help assess the conflict’s strategic, diplomatic, and operational dimensions.
US Commission Recognizes Pakistan’s Role
The U.S. delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role during the Afghanistan conflict. It also recognized the sacrifices made by Pakistan during the prolonged engagement.
Furthermore, the delegation appreciated Pakistan’s continued contribution to regional peace and stability.
