Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has called for the complete modernization of Pakistan Railways’ Main Line-1 (ML-1). He said the project will strengthen trade and regional connectivity.
Iqbal made the remarks at the Development Partners Dialogue in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The event focused on advancing trade, tourism, and regional competitiveness.
ML-1 Remains Pakistan’s Railway Backbone
The minister described ML-1 as the backbone of Pakistan’s railway network. The route carries a large share of the country’s passenger and freight traffic.
Therefore, its modernization could improve railway capacity and operational efficiency. It could also support faster movement of people and goods.
Karachi-Peshawar Corridor to Get Major Upgrade
Pakistan plans to modernize the Karachi-Peshawar railway corridor under the ML-1 project. According to Iqbal, the upgrade will increase line capacity and improve train speeds.
The project will also reduce travel times along key sections. In particular, modernization between Karachi and Rohri remains a major priority.
Karachi-Rohri Section Leads the Project
The Karachi-Rohri section has an estimated cost of around $2.5 billion. It currently represents the most advanced component of the ML-1 modernization plan.
The Asian Development Bank is leading efforts to arrange financing for this section. Meanwhile, Pakistan continues to work on funding options for the remaining route.
Pakistan Seeks Integrated ML-1 Development
The remaining sections will extend from Rohri to Peshawar. Iqbal stressed that Pakistan should complete ML-1 as one integrated Karachi-Peshawar corridor.
Furthermore, completing the full route would create a more connected railway network. It would also support freight movement and regional trade.
Railway Modernization and Regional Connectivity
A modern ML-1 could strengthen Pakistan’s role in regional transportation networks. Better rail infrastructure can improve the movement of goods between major commercial centers.
As a result, the project remains closely linked to Pakistan’s wider goals for trade, tourism, and regional economic connectivity.
