Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the United States and Iran to return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible. He made the remarks during talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday.
Xi said China supports efforts to resolve differences through peaceful means. He also reiterated Beijing’s view that the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected.
China Supports Return to Islamabad MoU
Xi said China supports the United States and Iran in returning to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement has emerged as a framework for restarting negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
China had already called on both sides to return to the Islamabad MoU earlier this month. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Iran and the US to exercise restraint and rebuild their negotiation mechanism.
Xi Calls for Peaceful Resolution
The Chinese president said Beijing has consistently encouraged the relevant parties to pursue peaceful solutions. He also called for maintaining momentum in negotiations and reducing tensions.
Furthermore, Xi expressed hope that the United States and Iran can eventually reach a comprehensive agreement covering the nuclear issue and other matters. He said such an agreement could help bring peace to the region.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
China’s latest position comes amid continued international diplomatic efforts over the US-Iran conflict. Beijing has repeatedly encouraged Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations rather than prolong the confrontation.
Earlier, Wang Yi also called for measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and protect international energy, transport, and supply chains.
Pakistan’s Role in the Negotiation Framework
The reference to the Islamabad MoU highlights Pakistan’s diplomatic role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. China’s support for returning to the framework also places renewed attention on Islamabad as a venue for diplomatic engagement.
The latest remarks by Xi reinforce Beijing’s stated preference for dialogue, negotiation, and de-escalation in addressing the dispute.
