Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to strengthen their economic partnership and expand practical cooperation across multiple sectors.

The understanding came during talks between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov in Bishkek.

Both leaders discussed ways to increase bilateral trade, attract investment, and improve regional connectivity.

Trade Target Set at $200 Million

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said both countries will develop a comprehensive plan to gradually raise bilateral trade to $200 million.

The plan will also improve trade mechanisms and promote joint investment projects. In addition, both sides will strengthen industrial cooperation and direct business-to-business contacts.

Shehbaz also welcomed closer engagement between Pakistani and Kyrgyz business and financial institutions.

Transit Deal to Improve Regional Connectivity

Connectivity remains a central part of the two countries’ economic vision. The Prime Minister welcomed the newly signed transit trade agreement.

The agreement aims to facilitate trade and improve logistics. Moreover, it could create new opportunities linking South Asia with Central Asia.

Kyrgyz President Japarov said Pakistan’s seaports provide Kyrgyzstan with a natural route to South Asian markets and global trade networks.

Energy Cooperation Gains Momentum

Energy also emerged as a major area of cooperation. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of completing the CASA-1000 project on time.

They also welcomed the creation of a joint energy working group. The group will explore cooperation in electricity, hydropower, renewable energy, infrastructure, and modern technology.

Investment Opportunities Expand

President Japarov said the two countries will take systematic steps to increase trade and diversify traded products.

Furthermore, both sides expressed readiness to develop joint projects in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, energy, light industry, tourism, and the digital economy.

Cooperation will also cover virtual assets and other emerging sectors.

Education, Technology and Tourism

Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan also welcomed expanding cooperation in education, science and technology, health, culture, and tourism.

The two countries further welcomed the establishment of sister-city relations between Lahore and Osh. This initiative can strengthen people-to-people and institutional exchanges.

Security and Climate Cooperation

Security and defence cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism, extremism, and other emerging threats.

Meanwhile, the countries agreed to deepen cooperation on environmental and climate-related issues.

New Agreements Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Earlier, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan signed several agreements and memorandums of understanding.

The agreements cover transit trade, counter-narcotics cooperation, education, academic research, science and technology, climate change, virtual assets, postal services, and e-commerce.

They also signed an agreement establishing sister-city relations between Lahore and Osh.

Stronger Cooperation at Global Forums

The two leaders agreed to maintain regular political dialogue and coordinate their positions at international forums.

Both countries cooperate through the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and Economic Cooperation Organization.

Japarov also congratulated Pakistan on assuming the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

A Growing Pakistan-Central Asia Partnership

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described Kyrgyzstan as an important and valued partner for Pakistan in Central Asia.

Overall, the agreements provide a broader framework for stronger economic and regional cooperation. With trade, transit, energy, and investment at the center, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan aim to build deeper economic links between South and Central Asia.
