Pakistan and Iran are advancing economic cooperation through stronger links between Gwadar and Chabahar ports, improved border infrastructure, and expanded regional connectivity initiatives.
The growing cooperation is expected to support cross-border trade, strengthen regional supply chains, and complement wider connectivity networks linked with the Belt and Road Initiative.
Pakistan-Iran Discuss Trade Expansion
The latest progress followed a meeting between Mohammad Saeid Arbabi and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran Imran Ahmed Siddiqui in Tehran.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to expand bilateral trade, investment, logistics cooperation, and transit opportunities.
Moreover, officials explored the potential of the Chabahar-Gwadar corridor and the proposed Rimdan-Gabd Joint Free Zone to encourage cross-border investment and commercial activity.
Ports Seen as Complementary Hubs
Arbabi highlighted Chabahar’s role as Iran’s only oceanic free zone located on international transport corridors.
He said closer cooperation with Gwadar could improve logistics efficiency, attract investment, and strengthen regional supply chains.
Furthermore, he emphasized that Chabahar and Gwadar should be viewed as complementary ports rather than competitors, with both contributing to regional economic growth.
Rimdan-Gabd Corridor to Support Trade
Both sides stressed the importance of fully utilizing ports, free zones, and border crossings to increase trade within the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
Arbabi proposed establishing an independent joint border crossing between Rimdan and Gabd to reduce transportation time, increase cargo capacity, and improve trade flows.
The initiative also supports the shared goal of increasing bilateral trade between Pakistan and Iran to US$10 billion.
New Transport Links Under Discussion
Ambassador Siddiqui welcomed proposals to expand cooperation through Gwadar, Chabahar, and the Rimdan-Gabd region.
He said improved border coordination would benefit communities on both sides and strengthen long-standing Pakistan-Iran relations.
Separately, Sistan and Baluchestan Province Governor Mansour Bijar said recent discussions with Pakistani officials produced positive outcomes on trade and connectivity.
