Karakoram International University has signed a memorandum of understanding with a Chinese company from China to advance research on medicinal plants in Gilgit-Baltistan.
New Research Center Planned
Under the agreement, both sides will establish a dedicated research center at KIU. Moreover, the facility will focus on identifying indigenous medicinal plants and analyzing their therapeutic potential for pharmaceutical use.
Focus on Scientific and Commercial Development
In addition, the collaboration will explore the commercial utilization of regional plant resources. As a result, it aims to connect scientific research with practical applications in the pharmaceutical sector.
Opportunities for Local Researchers
The initiative will also provide students and researchers in Gilgit-Baltistan with new opportunities for field-based scientific studies. Consequently, local academic capacity in botany and medicinal sciences is expected to improve.
Strengthening China–Pakistan Scientific Cooperation
Overall, the MoU reflects growing cooperation between Pakistan and China in natural resource research and biotechnology. Furthermore, it supports broader efforts to develop regional scientific infrastructure and innovation capacity.
