China’s first specialized medical aircraft, the C909 airplane hospital, successfully completed its first onboard eye surgery in Laos. The patient recovered well, marking the start of the plane’s overseas public welfare medical program under the Air Health Silk Road initiative. The aircraft arrived in Vientiane on February 6 and will operate in Laos until February 15.
During its mission, the C909 airplane hospital provides comprehensive medical care including mobile diagnoses, surgical treatments, medical staff training, and supply donations. The program focuses on eye, ear, nose, and throat conditions, bringing modern healthcare to communities that otherwise lack access.
The C909 can carry between 78 and 97 passengers and is built to operate on short or narrow runways, even in high-temperature, high-altitude, and crosswind conditions. Its deployment demonstrates China’s innovation in using aviation technology to deliver essential medical services directly to people in need.
