China has emerged as the undisputed leader in the first-ever Nature Index ranking for applied sciences, with Chinese research institutions occupying all top 30 positions globally. The Chinese Academy of Sciences ranked first, followed by Zhejiang University, highlighting China’s overwhelming presence in applied scientific research.
According to the index, researchers based in China accounted for 56 percent of the total global output in applied sciences, with a Share score exceeding 22,000. The United States ranked a distant second with around 10 percent of total output, while Germany, South Korea, the UK, Japan, and India followed further behind.
The Nature Index ranking is based on research published in 25 leading applied-sciences journals and conferences selected by nearly 4,200 researchers worldwide. The findings underscore China’s growing influence in global scientific innovation, with its output surpassing the combined contribution of several leading research nations.
