The HQ-9BE long-range air defense missile system developed by China was showcased at a military parade in Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 8, 2025. Azerbaijani media reported that the system, newly inducted into service, appeared alongside other Chinese-made air defense equipment, including the HQ-22 and HQ-17AE missiles.
Videos from Baku TV showed HQ-9BE transporter erector launcher vehicles in the parade, highlighting China’s advanced missile capabilities. The HQ-9BE, first revealed at Airshow China 2021, is designed for long-range air defense and can intercept stealth aircraft and tactical ballistic missiles. It can coordinate with medium- and short-range systems to form a layered defense network. Experts praised its adaptability, operational simplicity, and ability to counter multiple high-value targets simultaneously.
The parade also featured a formation of JF-17 fighter jets, jointly developed by China and Pakistan. Pakistan had recently signed a contract to sell JF-17 Block III jets to Azerbaijan, and the aircraft joined the aviation demonstration in V-shaped formation.
Chinese experts noted that Chinese military equipment is gaining global recognition due to its performance. The HQ-9BE’s dual capability in anti-aircraft and ballistic missile defense is seen as a key factor driving international interest. A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Defense emphasized a cautious and responsible approach to exporting military technology, stating China is willing to share modernized equipment with peace-loving nations to maintain regional stability.
