China and the United States have reached a basic framework consensus on the TikTok issue following bilateral talks held in Madrid on September 14 and 15, according to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce on Saturday. The discussions centred on finding a cooperative solution, reducing investment barriers, and advancing broader economic and trade cooperation.
The announcement came after a phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden on Friday evening. Both leaders held a candid exchange of views on bilateral relations and matters of common concern, offering strategic direction for the next phase of stable ties between the two nations.
The Chinese spokesperson emphasised that Beijing’s position remains consistent: the government respects the company’s autonomy, supports negotiations aligned with market rules, and welcomes solutions that comply with Chinese laws while safeguarding the interests of both sides.
Calling for reciprocity, the spokesperson urged Washington to honour its commitments and ensure a fair, equitable, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese firms, including TikTok, operating in the United States. This, the statement noted, is essential for fostering stable, healthy, and sustainable growth in China-US economic and trade relations.
