Libyan Armed Forces’ Commander-in-Chief, Lt Gen Saddam Khalifa Haftar, met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House on Friday to discuss enhancing cooperation and advancing shared interests between Libya and Pakistan across multiple sectors.
Prime Minister Shehbaz extended a warm welcome to the Libyan commander and his delegation, expressing Pakistan’s appreciation for their visit.
The prime minister remarked that Pakistan was honored to host the delegation and expressed optimism about further strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
Lt Gen Haftar expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz for the cordial welcome and generous hospitality. The meeting was also attended by key figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Defence Production Minister Raza Hayat Hiraj, Advisor to the PM Dr. Tauqir Shah, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, and other senior officials.
Later the same day, Lt Gen Haftar also met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ), according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
During their meeting, both leaders agreed to foster defence industrial collaboration and share technical expertise to jointly tackle modern security threats.
Their talks also covered a broad range of issues including mutual interests, shifting regional dynamics, security concerns, and defence cooperation.
Upon arriving at GHQ, Lt Gen Haftar paid tribute to Pakistan’s martyrs by laying a floral wreath at the Yadgar-i-Shuhada (martyrs’ monument).
He was received with full military honours, including a guard of honour presented by a well-turned-out contingent of the Pakistan Army, the ISPR noted.
His visit takes place amid fresh unrest in Libya, where the capital Tripoli saw its worst violence in years in May following the killing of a prominent militia leader.
The situation later calmed after the Libyan government declared a ceasefire two days after the clashes began.
