China urges U.S. to immediately lift sanctions on Cuba
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

China on Wednesday called on the United States to immediately lift its sanctions on Cuba and remove the country from the list of “state sponsors of terrorism.”

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks during a routine press briefing in response to a question about U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to sign a memorandum aimed at tightening U.S. policy toward Cuba.

Mao condemned the U.S.’s over six-decade-long blockade and sanctions on Cuba, describing them as harsh and illegal measures that have severely infringed on Cuba’s right to survival and development. She said these actions also violate international norms and have caused immense suffering for the Cuban people.

She reiterated China’s firm support for Cuba’s right to choose a development path that aligns with its national circumstances and criticized U.S. unilateral sanctions imposed under the pretense of promoting freedom and democracy.

Mao further stated that the international community widely supports the removal of sanctions on Cuba and its delisting from the “state sponsors of terrorism,” reflecting a global consensus on the issue.
