Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor Corporation officially broke ground on a new manufacturing facility for its Lexus electric vehicles (EVs) in Shanghai’s Jinshan District on Friday.
Alongside the EV assembly plant, the site will also house a battery research and production facility. Toyota aims to begin production by 2027, with an initial annual output of around 100,000 vehicles.
Jiang Juwang, head of Jinshan District’s investment promotion office, noted that while Jinshan is not traditionally known as an automotive center, its strategic position in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta makes it well-connected to suppliers, R&D institutions, and Shanghai’s autonomous driving firms.
This proximity forms a “one-hour supply chain radius,” which enables Toyota to efficiently source components locally for its key manufacturing operations, Jiang explained.
The project progressed rapidly, taking just over two months from the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between the Shanghai Municipal Government and Toyota on April 22, followed by a memorandum of cooperation with the Jinshan District Government, to the start of construction.
