A Chinese diplomat welcomed the General Assembly’s resolution passed on Thursday, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and unrestricted humanitarian aid access.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, stated that the resolution represents the strong voice of the global community, delivers a powerful political message, and highlights the unity and shared concern among the vast majority of UN member states.
He expressed regret that the UN Security Council was unable to pass a similar resolution the previous week due to a veto by the United States.
During his explanation of vote, Fu urged Israel to stop its military operations in Gaza.
He emphasized that Israel’s ongoing military escalation continues to claim many innocent lives daily. “No justification can make the killing of civilians legitimate or acceptable,” he added.
Fu stressed that an immediate and lasting ceasefire is the only viable solution to save lives and secure the release of hostages. He urged Israel to cease all military actions and called on influential nations to act with fairness, responsibility, and determination.
He also criticized the use of humanitarian aid as a political tool.
Fu pointed out that while the UN and aid agencies warn of an approaching large-scale famine in Gaza, warehouses full of food remain blocked at the border, unable to reach the starving population.
He condemned this situation as a violation of international law and a form of cruelty. Fu called on Israel to fulfill its legal duties as the occupying power by lifting the blockade, fully restoring aid access, and supporting UN-led humanitarian efforts.
Fu further noted that despite multiple resolutions from both the General Assembly and Security Council, and several orders from the International Court of Justice demanding a ceasefire, implementation has been lacking.
He emphasized that under the UN Charter, all member states are required to carry out Security Council resolutions. Upholding international law and humanitarian norms is a duty shared by all, and the international community must act to end violations and ensure accountability.
Fu concluded by affirming China’s commitment to work alongside the global community to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and work toward a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue.
The General Assembly resolution was passed with 149 votes in favor, 12 against, and 19 abstentions. China voted in support.
