China’s Malipo Laoshan tea featured at UN for International Tea Day showcasing tea’s role in economic, cultural, and ecological development.
The Third Laoshan International Tea Festival took place on Wednesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to celebrate International Tea Day 2025.
Geng Shuang, China’s chargé d’affaires to the UN, highlighted that even a small tea leaf can stimulate economic growth and improve livelihoods. He emphasized that tea embodies harmony between humanity and nature, aligning with the concept of ecological civilization.
Geng further stated that tea also acts as a symbol of peace and a bridge between different cultures.
He added that advancing tea cultivation, its economy, and cultural heritage exemplifies the implementation of the Global Development and Civilization Initiatives. These efforts foster mutual understanding and shared progress among nations.
Egypt’s UN Ambassador Osama Mahmoud Abdel Khalek Mahmoud and UN Assistant Secretary-General Bjorg Sandkjaer echoed these sentiments. They noted that the tea industry supports job creation, economic development, cultural exchange, and the achievement of global sustainability goals.
Around 200 guests, including UN diplomats and officials, attended the event. The festival included tea ceremonies, traditional music and dance performances, and a special exhibit titled “China’s Poverty Alleviation Model: A Case Study of Malipo County.”
