CPEC projects advance with enhanced coordination mechanism: Tariq Fazal while addressing during the Question Hour of the National Assembly.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhary announced on Monday that the government has set up a dedicated CPEC Secretariat within the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, under the leadership of Minister Ahsan Iqbal. This move is intended to enhance coordination among various federal and provincial bodies involved in CPEC-related activities.

During the National Assembly’s question hour, Dr. Fazal noted that since the establishment of the Secretariat, CPEC has played a key role in driving economic and infrastructure development in Pakistan. However, he acknowledged that inter-departmental coordination issues have hindered timely project execution. The revamped framework introduced in 2023 is designed to address these obstacles.

The minister explained that the Secretariat, created under the CPEC Support Project, will serve as a central platform to ensure smoother communication and decision-making among all stakeholders. It will also collaborate with China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to align efforts on joint projects.

Highlighting the initiative’s significance, Dr. Chaudhary emphasized that accelerating CPEC project progress requires close coordination with both provincial and federal institutions, and the government is dedicated to taking effective steps in that direction.

He stated that CPEC encompasses a range of sectors such as energy, transport, and infrastructure. The Secretariat will supervise project execution, resolve staffing shortages, and ensure that project directors receive adequate support to meet their objectives.

To improve transparency and stakeholder engagement, the ministry plans to hold regular CPEC Progress Review Meetings, allowing for consistent updates and discussions on project milestones.

Dr. Fazal further told the assembly that the initiative is not only about enhancing operational performance but also about responding to the concerns raised by both the public and private sectors regarding delays and project effectiveness.

He underscored that establishing the CPEC Secretariat represents a major step in Pakistan’s development strategy, marking a new phase of collaboration and growth aimed at optimizing the benefits of the CPEC initiative and swiftly addressing any barriers.

He concluded by saying that this proactive strategy is designed to sustain momentum and ensure on-time project completion. Additionally, the Planning Minister has instructed all relevant ministries to conduct regular meetings of their Joint Working Groups (JWGs) to fast-track existing projects and explore new opportunities.
