China urges global unity for peaceful utilization of outer space, highlighting efforts required for genuine multilateralism.
China has urged the global community to enhance international collaboration for the peaceful utilization of outer space and to steadily advance global space governance, according to a statement made by a Chinese envoy on Monday.
The appeal was delivered by Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international bodies in Vienna, during the 64th session of the Legal Subcommittee under the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
According to Li, the rapid evolution of space technology is revolutionizing humanity’s approach to space exploration but also introduces new complexities in managing space affairs globally. He emphasized the need for genuine multilateralism and cautioned against unilateral actions and coercive practices.
Li highlighted China’s proactive role in promoting international cooperation in space and its efforts to share development outcomes with the world. He cited the example of experimental projects, jointly chosen with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, that are currently being carried out on China’s space station.
Li concluded by affirming China’s commitment to furthering peaceful space endeavors and enhancing global governance mechanisms, aiming to ensure that the fruits of space exploration are shared universally, with particular benefits for developing nations in the Global South.
