German Ambassador visits extensions of Tarbela Hydropower and praised the progress in the projects, emphasizing its role in Pakistan’s energy sector.
German Ambassador to Pakistan, Alfred Grannas, along with Counselor Dr. Sebastian Paust, visited the Tarbela 4th and 5th Extension Hydropower Projects on March 24. These critical energy projects, developed by PowerChina, were the focus of detailed briefings provided during the visit, outlining the company’s contributions to Pakistan’s power sector.
Ambassador Grannas and Dr. Paust commended PowerChina for its outstanding execution of the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project, acknowledging the company’s dedication from the early construction stages to the initiation of power generation.
They highlighted the project’s role in strengthening Pakistan’s energy infrastructure and expressed enthusiasm for potential future collaborations between Chinese and German firms. Such partnerships, they noted, could drive Pakistan’s sustainable economic growth by leveraging expertise in engineering, renewable energy, and infrastructure.
The Tarbela 4th and 5th Extension Hydropower Projects are crucial to Pakistan’s efforts to boost electricity production. The 4th Extension (T4HP) adds 1,410 megawatts (MW) to the grid, while the 5th Extension (T5HP) contributes an additional 1,530 MW. Upon completion, these projects will expand the Tarbela Dam’s total installed capacity from 4,888 MW to 6,418 MW, significantly improving national power supply and meeting rising energy demands.
Beyond electricity generation, the Tarbela Dam serves multiple purposes vital to Pakistan’s development. As the largest earth-filled dam in the world, it supports irrigated agriculture, ensures water storage, and helps mitigate flood risks. The additional energy capacity from these expansions will not only enhance power stability but also reinforce the dam’s role in ensuring agricultural productivity and economic resilience.
The visit underscored the opportunities for increased global cooperation in Pakistan’s infrastructure sector. Ambassador Grannas reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting collaborative initiatives that contribute to sustainable development in the country.
