China-Laos 500 kV Power Project breaks ground as it aims to enhance electrical connectivity significantly.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Lao segment of the China-Laos 500 kV power interconnection project took place in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, on Wednesday.
Once completed, this project will greatly enhance electricity connectivity and mutual energy support between China and Laos.
The event was attended by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, various Lao government officials, and representatives from the Chinese government and enterprises.
During his speech, Lao Minister of Energy and Mines Phoxay Sayasone described the project as a key strategic energy initiative. He emphasized that it will not only boost Laos’ economic development but also strengthen power grid interconnection and energy cooperation between Laos and China’s southern provinces.
Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong, also speaking at the event, highlighted the project as a significant milestone in advancing China-Laos practical cooperation. Following the success of the China-Laos Railway, it represents another step forward in their joint efforts under the Belt and Road Initiative.
She further emphasized the essential role of electricity as a driver of economic and social progress, contributing to improved livelihoods and regional prosperity. She stressed the importance of implementing agreements made by the leadership of both nations, with a central focus on constructing the China-Laos Economic Corridor and deepening energy and electricity collaboration through grid interconnection.
The China-Laos 500 kV power interconnection project is a key component of the broader initiative to build a China-Laos community with a shared future. The project is expected to be completed and operational by 2026, allowing for a bidirectional power exchange capacity of 1.5 million kW and enabling the transmission of approximately 3 billion kWh of clean electricity.
The Lao section of the project is being developed by Electricite du Laos Transmission Company Limited, while China Southern Power Grid Company is overseeing the Chinese segment
